Charlottetown Airport Authority Reflects Back on 2017 Accomplishments

Charlottetown, PE – Charlottetown Airport Authority (CAA) reflected back on the accomplishments achieved by the airport in 2017 at their annual public meeting today. The authority also reported on their operating and financial results and highlighted key projects for the coming year.  "From hitting all-time-high passenger traffic levels, to completing the largest infrastructure investment in the airport’s history and so much more, I’m proud to say the airport continues to push its limits and evolve in this ever changing and challenging industry,” says Doug Newson, Airport CEO.

In 2017, the airport saw an impressive 4.6% increase in passenger movements over 2016, setting a new high of 370,688 passengers in one year. They completed the second year of their three-year runway improvement project with the extension of Runway 10-28 by 2000ft. And they saw increased capacity by their airline partners, especially during the busy summer months. The year also included memorable events for the airport including the execution of a full-scale emergency exercise with their mutual aid partners, the launch of a new event focused on making travel easier for those on the autism spectrum called Autism Aviators, and developed a new strategic plan outlining the airport’s vision over the next three years.

"Our vision moving forward is to provide an exceptional passenger experience here at the Charlottetown Airport. And over the course of the next three years we will push ourselves to achieve that goal in all areas of the organization,” said Newson.

The authority also highlighted the numerous community partners and charitable organizations they have worked with over the past year including Cystic Fibrosis Canada – PEI Chapter, Hope Air, CBC Feed a Family and Easter Seals.

Earlier in the day, the authority elected Kent Scales as its newest Chair of the Board. Kent takes over from Shaun MacIsaac who will be retiring from the board after serving for the past nine years, including the past four as Chair. Kent has been a board member since September 2013 as a nominee from the City of Charlottetown. He brings a diverse background to the role with experience in both the public and private sector and also donates his time to numerous other boards in Charlottetown.
