The Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc. assumed operational and financial responsibility for the Charlottetown Airport on March 1, 1999. The Board of Directors now oversees the affairs of the airport with a mission to operate a safe, efficient, competitive and financially viable, high quality airport that facilitates the air transportation needs of Prince Edward Island, the travelling public and our aviation clients.

The Charlottetown Airport is located within the City of Charlottetown in the Province of Prince Edward Island. The airport facility is located on Maple Hills Avenue, just minutes from downtown Charlottetown, off Route 15 on the Brackley Point Road.

The airport is located on 610 hectares (1508 acres) of land which is currently owned by Transport Canada but operated since March 1, 1999 under a long-term lease by the Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc., a "not-for-profit"corporation.

Charlottetown Airport is a public use land airport and operates day and night (24 hours/day, 7 days/week) using both Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).

The airport has 2 runways, 03/21 being the primary runway that is 7000 feet long by 150 feet wide and is equipped with an Instrument Landing System (ILS). Runway 10/28 is the secondary runway and is 5000 feet long by 150 feet wide.

There are two aircraft parking Aprons (Apron I & II). Apron I is used primarily by scheduled air carriers and larger general aviation aircraft and has approximately 25,600 sq. m. (183m x 100m) of concrete and an asphalt extension of (134m x 50m). Apron II is of asphalt construction with approximately 9,000 sq. m. (110m x 82m) of parking/movement space.

The Air Terminal Building, constructed in 1985/86, is a spacious, barrier free facility, including a restaurant, gift shop, lounge and four major vehicle rental agencies. There is a taxi concession license which stipulates that the taxi concessionaire must meet all scheduled flights and provide a taxi service to Charlottetown and all surrounding areas. Licensed tour and bus operations also operate from the airport.

Other amenities in the terminal building include a free WIFI network, an ATM, a money changer, public pay phones, a visitor's information centre with touch screen trip planning software generating printable or QR code enabled itineraries and public access computers. Ample parking is available in either the Short-Term or in the Long-Term Parking Lot.

Various general aviation businesses and other tenants are located at the airport with additional airside and ground side lots available for lease. The Airport Business Centre is located immediately adjacent to Brackley Point Road, 0.5 km north of the Charlottetown By-Pass Highway providing tenants with quick and easy access to the downtown core or the provincial highway system.

Charlottetown Airport is Prince Edward Island's only commercially operated airport providing the necessary infrastructure and facilities for airlines offering scheduled air service. Scheduled airlines include Air Canada, and WestJet year-round. Sunwing and Delta Airlines provide seasonal service. These airlines provide service from Charlottetown to Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, and New York International airports with connections worldwide. Air cargo and air freight services are also available from the scheduled carriers but only on a space available basis.

The Passenger Facility Fee (PFF) was implemented January 1, 2001 at $10.00 per enplaned passenger. It increased to $15.00 June 1, 2004 and again on July 1, 2011 to $20.00 per enplaned passenger. This increase was necessary due to operating cost increases and projects identified since the Passenger Facility Fee was implemented January 2001. Airports throughout the country are facing substantial increases in both operating and capital costs. All airports have experienced sharp rises in the costs of new security regulations, increased insurance coverage expenses and fuel and utility charges.

In Charlottetown, the Airport Master Plan, completed in 2010, identified $40 million dollars in Capital spending required for the next ten years. Projects include: the rehabilitation of runways and aircraft parking aprons, vehicle parking and road systems, modification of the Air Terminal Building and the replacement of heavy equipment as necessary.

The Passenger Facility Fee is added directly to each airline ticket and is used to fund capital projects and airport operations.
